What is SLD?

Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) is the unexpected learning difficulties observed in the ability to learn or use specific academic skills like reading, writing, spelling or arithmetic. It is a chronic condition that typically persists into adulthood it is neurological in origin. It can vary in degree of severity there is no cure for dyslexia and individuals with this condition must learn to cope strategies to manage it.

Major Indicators

 

  • Difficulty reading aloud

  • Difficulty with memorization of alphabet

  • Poor self esteem

  • Difficulty spelling words

  • Difficulty recognizing the sounds that letters make

  • Poor hand writing

  • Difficulty with following directions

  • Reluctance to read

  • Letter or number removals

  • Difficulty with memorization of math facts

  • Specific Learning Disorder is multifaceted and fall in to the three basic categories.

  • Dyslexia (Reading Disorder)

  • Dysgraphia (Writing Disorder)

  • Dyscalculia (Arithmetic Disorders)

Specific Learning Disorders Intervention

Calibre has a well-developed SLD intervention clinic offering one on one reading, writing, spelling, mathematics intervention to students of all ages. Children with SLD can achieve better outcomes through early identification and research based, goal directed intensive therapy. We use the structured multi-sensory approach to facilitate learning and memory. All interventions are administered by highly trained and experienced specialists.
